Upstream from Mwaleshi Camp and close to the airstrip, a full-day trip to Mwaleshi Falls is a undoubted North Luangwa highlight. For a starter, this is one of the few opportunities you will get to explore the North Luangwa in a “game drive”, as transfers to and from the waterfall will inevitably produce wildlife viewing opportunities and the chance to appreciate the true remoteness of this untouched wilderness. The Mwaleshi Falls are no torrent like their world famous counterpart in southern Zambia, but they are intensely scenic and tranquil, with two major torrents cascading over the rocks into crystal clear waters below.
It is possible to take a refreshing dip in the shallow waters of the river without fear of crocodiles or hippo, although you will definitely see hippos nearby at other stretches of the river. After a few days of walking in the bush, this is a very relaxing break from the exertion, and it’s a wonderful privilege to get your hair wet in a location that so few other people have sampled. Stays of three nights or longer at Mwaleshi Camp are usually inclusive of a trip to the Falls, or you can book and pay for this excursion separately.
