Chongwe Safaris now offer a fascinating canoeing itinerary with exclusive use of the Tsika Island bushcamp, for 2-5 days’ worth of canoe safari activities and responsible tourism. Based around 35km upstream from Chongwe itself, this beautiful island in the Zambezi offers guests the chance to explore the surrounding banks, islands and channels in great detail, mixing exertion and relaxation with wildlife and culture. Accommodation is in a small, rustic camp that has all the luxury you would need on this kind of itinerary, plus some of the quirky touches you would expect from a Chongwe accommodation!
The scheme is a community partnership project, providing access to the Mugurumeno School and village on the mainland, so that canoeing and game viewing are combined with insightful cultural activities. Money from each booking goes towards development of the community to engender a feeling of local involvement in the project and promote conservation of the Lower Zambezi’s delicate ecology. In terms of an unspoiled, scenic location and a unique overall experience, the Tsika Island project is a wonderful addition to the range of Lower Zambezi activities.
